Saturday 3rd November 2018
Saturday 3rd November saw the Emerald Warriors travel to Malahide for only the second game of the league campaign. The previous game on 13th October v Old Belvedere felt like an age away; however the defeat was still very fresh in the memory of the team.
Weather conditions were significantly improved, however a strong cross field wind was present for both teams to try and contend with.
Malahide won the coin toss and opted to play as they were, however we opted for Malahide to kick off first. This worked to our advantage by giving us possession to attack from the start. From the kick-off, we gathered possession and in what felt like only a few seconds, we were in for our first try via a break from the centre. This showed the intention we had that we weren’t going to sit back and let the league leaders take control of the game. In response, Malahide did strike back with a try of their own shortly after. This was the overall pattern of the game; very end to end with both teams presented with opportunities to get scores on the board. Our defensive work was good, however not good enough to prevent Malahide matching us try for try. The first half ended on a score line of 26:28 to the Emerald Warriors.
The second half was a much tighter affair with both teams not wanting to lose the game. The Warriors stepped it up a level by bringing it to Malahide from the get-go. We were the better team in the second half and dominated a lot of the play, however we handed possession back to Malahide on a number of occasions deep into their own half via the lineout. Losing our Hooker to injury and the wind both factors. After some good play on the right hand side, we were in for another try. Malahide responded, however again we were in for a try after a penalty was awarded and a quick tap and go was taken. This brought the score to 31:40 to the Emerald Warriors. In the dying seconds, Malahide scored another try to bring the game to 36:40. Our defensive work as a team was strong and pushed them out wide where conversation attempts were very unlikely with the wind blowing across the pitch.
The game finished 36:40 to the Emerald Warriors. A huge achievement in only the second game of the division 9 metro league and something we as a club should all take pride in. Big congratulations to Kevin, Luke and Philip for three great performances in their first games for the club / in D9.
