Meet the Warriors – Colin Graham
2 years ago a few of my mates were going along to an open day for the inclusive rugby team based nearby. I was vaguely aware of the Emerald Warriors, having known a few players in passing over the years, but not really knowing anything about the team apart from the fact that the majority of them were gay and that they played rugby.
I tagged along with my mates to this open day, with absolutely zero intention of taking up rugby at the ripe old age of 31. I had an absolute blast and I just never stopped going. I can say with no doubt in my mind that tagging along to a simple rugby open day was one of the greatest decisions i’ve ever made in my life.
Today I’m healthier, happier and in better shape than I’ve ever thought possible. Every preconception I’ve had about gay rugby has been challenged. When you see a queen dump tackle a 6’4″ prop, the concept of masc vs fem goes straight out the window.
People I knew in passing have become friends I’ll hold onto for life and people I never would have met otherwise have become dear friends. I’ve had some truly amazing experiences over the last two years.
