Warriors win the Shield at Bingham 2010
The biennial Bingham Cup tournament took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota June 17 - 20 2010, attracting 24 teams from Manchester, Sydney, Toronto, Paris and USA cities. We topped our group by defeating North Sea Pirates 48-0, Madison Minotaurs 33-0, and Phoenix Storm 8-5 in a exciting game. In the grouping round we suffered our only loss, to the locals, Minneapolis Mayhem 7-3 in another close game, where we led for most of match. This result placed us in the shield category where we easily dispatched the Nashville Grizzles 19-0 to play San Francisco Fog B in the final. After 3 penalties the Warriors led 9-0 and a final try gave us a winning score of 16 - 0.
In our best Bingham performance to date, we played 6 games, won 5, earning 127 points and only conceded 12. The welcome home party for the shield takes place in the Front Lounge on Sat 17th July.
The Bingham tournament is named for Mark Bingham, a founder of San Francisco Fog rugby club, who helped disrupt the hijackers aboard United Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001. In addition to the players, thanks is also due to our supporters who travelled with their vuvuzeulas and enjoyed the associated parties and events. Manchester and Sydney are bidding to host the next Bingham in 2012.
